Looking for the Right Low Resistance, High Saturation Current Inductor?

Bourns just added 11 new inductor model series to its shielded power inductor line specifically to meet the higher power efficiency now required in a broad range of consumer electronics.  Inductors are popular energy storage devices that have been used in DC to DC conversion circuits for decades. Designers of DC/DC converters that have higher current and frequency requirements typically find it necessary to employ a high current shielded flat wire inductor solution.  Bourns designed its Model SRP0xxx series with lower DC resistance that dissipates less power during operation, especially at higher current and switching frequencies. This helps enable a DC/DC converter or power supply to achieve higher power efficiency and match a customer’s design specifications.

The reduced DC resistance featured in Model SRP0xxx series inductors benefit a growing number of high current density applications such as smartphones, tablet terminals, laptop computers, hard disk drives, solid state drives, servers, voltage regulators and compact power supply modules that typically operate at higher temperatures.  Because these applications generate increased heat, they can experience higher degradation rates.

Saving valuable board space, Bourns® Model SRP0xxx series are offered in a very low profile (less than 2 mm) package. In addition to low copper loss and DC resistance, all 11 model series deliver audible core noise as well as high current saturation benefits.

Bourns continues to innovate its magnetics design and manufacturing.  The latest inductors feature a metal alloy powder core and flat wire construction that enables very low copper losses and helps to improve efficiency. Inductors with metal cores are known to have outstanding saturation magnetic flux density, making them optimal solutions for designs with larger currents. Plus, the type of shielded construction developed by Bourns produces low magnetic radiation offering good EMI performance and excellent temperature stability. Powdered iron core designs provide additional benefits.  Since the powder core is molded directly on the flat wire, the conductivity of the conductor is increased at high-frequency operation and wasted space is eliminated.

The new inductors are also manufactured using external laser welding between the wire and terminal that provide additional reliability advantages. This laser welding technique eliminates potential mechanical stress on the solder joint from the high-pressure molding process.  What’s more, Bourns uses an alpha-winding construction to achieve a wider inductance range at a given form factor. Alpha- winding also ensures that all the new series’ inductance values can be offered in a very low height profile package.
